Summer Financial Aid Resources

Graduating early?

If you will graduate early due to taking courses this upcoming summer, you may be eligible to apply your merit scholarship toward the tuition for the upcoming summer term. Visit the One Stop Appeal page and select “Baylor Scholarship and Grant Appeal” to request to use a semester of your merit scholarship in the summer. Once submitted, the financial aid office review your request and send a decision through BearWeb.

What type of financial aid is available for summer terms?

Generally, the following financial aid is available during the summer:

  • Federal Direct Loans: Through completing your FAFSA application, your eligibility for federal direct subsidized and unsubsidized loans will be determined. If you have not already reached your annual limit during the Fall and Spring semesters, you may be able to use these loan types to cover summer costs.
  • Federal PLUS Loans: To apply for a PLUS loan visit studentaid.gov. This type of loan requires a credit check, along a submitted FAFSA to determine if you’re eligible.
  • Private Loans: Private Loans can be applied for at the lender of your choice. Interest rates and terms will vary. Please visit the One Stop Loans page for more information on this loan type, as well as to access a list of preferred lenders to aid you in your search.
  • Outside Scholarships: Outside scholarships can be a great source of additional gift aid (does not need to be repaid). On our Outside Scholarships page you will find a link to Scholarship Universe, tips for winning scholarships, as well as how to report outside scholarships.
  • Federal Work-Study (FWS): FAFSA results will determine eligibility for Federal Work-Study. If you’re eligible for FWS (you can check this in your Financial Aid Dashboard in BearWeb), you can apply for open positions and work up to the established number of hours per week as set by the Office of Student Employment.

What is the minimum number of hours I can be enrolled to receive aid?

  • Federal Financial Aid: For Federal Direct and PLUS loans, and Federal Work-Study, you must be enrolled in at least half-time (six hours for undergraduates) to receive federal financial aid.
  • Private Loans: Private loans will vary depending on your lender and loan terms. Please review the terms of your loan for a minimum number of hours.
  • Scholarships: Scholarships also vary. For questions on minimum number of hours, review the terms of your scholarship (for Baylor scholarships terms can be found in BearWeb; just click on the name of the scholarship in your Award Offer).
